Overview
A nonprofit sailing organization relied on a heavily customized legacy CMS that had become increasingly expensive and difficult to maintain. Routine updates required developer involvement, content publishing workflows were inconsistent, and the platform created operational bottlenecks across multiple departments.
The organization needed a more sustainable solution that reduced long-term technology costs while making the website easier to manage internally.
The project focused on evaluating the existing platform, simplifying internal workflows, and guiding the organization through a strategic migration to WordPress — ultimately helping save hundreds of thousands of dollars in projected development and maintenance costs over time.

My Role
I worked closely with the organization throughout the planning, evaluation, and migration process to help simplify both the technical approach and long-term operational strategy.
Responsibilities included:
- auditing the existing CMS and workflows
- evaluating platform options and long-term costs
- helping define project scope and priorities
- simplifying content management processes
- guiding CMS migration planning
- improving operational efficiency across teams
- consulting on budget-conscious technology decisions
- helping create a scalable and sustainable digital strategy
A major focus of the project was balancing usability, flexibility, and long-term financial sustainability — ensuring the organization avoided unnecessary technical complexity while creating a platform staff could confidently manage internally.
The end result was a simpler, more maintainable system that reduced operational overhead and provided a stronger foundation for future growth.
